How Opportunity Products Link to Product Targets

Available In All Versions of GSP Target Tracker

The GSP Target Tracker automatically links Opportunity Products to the correct Product Target based on the information stored on the Opportunity Product, the related Product, and the Opportunity.

This allows organisations to measure product-level performance by ensuring that each Opportunity Product contributes towards the correct Product Target for the appropriate period.

Unlike Sales and Team Targets, which are based on Opportunities, Product Targets are based on Opportunity Products.

An Opportunity Product will only link to a Product Target when it meets all required matching conditions.

Prerequisites:
Please ensure the “GSP Target Tracker (User Access)” Permission Set is assigned to the user. If you are experiencing any issues, please confirm with your internal admin team that the Permission Set has been applied.

How It Works

An Opportunity Product links to a Product Target when the following conditions are met:

  1. The Product Category matches the Product Target Product Category
  2. The Opportunity date falls within the Product Target period
  3. The Opportunity Owner matches the Product Target Owner

When all matching conditions are satisfied, the Opportunity Product contributes its values towards the relevant Product Target.

For example:

An Opportunity Product with a Product Category of “Generators”, linked to a January 2026 Opportunity owned by Dave Apthorp, will link to Dave Apthorp’s January 2026 Product Target for “Generators”.

If any of the matching conditions are not met, the Opportunity Product will not contribute towards that Product Target.

Product Category Matching

The Product Category determines which Product Target an Opportunity Product can contribute towards.

The system uses the Product Category on the related Product record rather than a value stored directly on the Opportunity Product.

The system compares:

  • The Product Category on the Product
  • The Product Category on the Product Target

For example:

Product CategoryProduct Target CategoryResult
GeneratorsGeneratorsOpportunity Product can link
GeneratorsSolar PanelsOpportunity Product does not link

This allows businesses to define Product Targets around their own product groupings, such as:

  • Individual products
  • Product families
  • Industries
  • Markets or regions

Target Period Matching

The Opportunity date determines which Product Target period the Opportunity Product contributes towards.

By default, the GSP Target Tracker uses the Opportunity Close Date when determining the correct target period.

The system compares:

  • The Opportunity Close Date
  • The Product Target period

For example:

Opportunity Close DateProduct Target PeriodResult
January 15th 2026January 2026 TargetOpportunity Product can link
January 15th 2026February 2026 TargetOpportunity Product does not link

If your organisation has configured a custom target date, that field will be used instead of the standard Opportunity Close Date.

Salesperson Matching

Product Targets can be created for specific salespeople.

When using salesperson-specific Product Targets, the system compares:

  • The Opportunity Owner
  • The Product Target Owner

If these values match, the Opportunity Product can contribute towards that salesperson’s Product Target.

For example:

Opportunity OwnerProduct Target OwnerResult
Dave ApthorpDave ApthorpOpportunity Product can link
Dave ApthorpSarah SmithOpportunity Product does not link

This allows organisations to measure product performance by salesperson.

Key Fields

Product Category
Determines which Product Target category the Opportunity Product contributes towards. The Product Category is stored on the related Product record. For an Opportunity Product to link, the Product Category must match the Product Target category.

Opportunity Close Date
Determines which target period the Opportunity Product contributes towards. By default, the Opportunity Close Date is used to match Opportunity Products to Product Target periods. If a custom target date has been configured, that field will determine the matching period instead.

Opportunity Owner
Determines which salesperson’s Product Target receives credit. For salesperson-specific Product Targets, the Opportunity Owner must match the Product Target Owner.

Product Target
Represents the product performance target being measured. Product Targets track Opportunity Product performance against a defined product category, period, and (where applicable) salesperson.

Do Not Link to Target
Prevents an Opportunity Product from contributing towards any target. When the related Opportunity has the “Do Not Link to Target” checkbox enabled, its Opportunity Products will not link to Salesperson Targets, Team Targets or Product Targets.

Important Considerations:

Product Categories must be populated correctly
Opportunity Products associated with Products without a Product Category will not link to Product Targets. Before creating Product Targets, organisations should ensure that all relevant Products have the correct Product Category assigned.

Product Targets are based on Opportunity Products, not Opportunities
An Opportunity can contain multiple Opportunity Products, and each Product can contribute independently towards Product Targets. For example, an Opportunity containing 2 Generator products and 1 Solar Panel product may contribute to a Generator Product Target and a Solar Panel Product Target depending on the configured Product Categories.

A Product can only contribute to the matching Product Target
The Opportunity Product must meet the Product Category, target period, and salesperson matching criteria before it contributes towards a Product Target.
