Practical Tips on Boosting Pipeline Quality
This guide provides practical advice on measuring and improving sales pipeline quality in Salesforce.
It explains how to assess the overall health of your funnel, identify individual opportunities that may be weakening your pipeline, and configure Salesforce to support better deal qualification.
Why This Matters
A large pipeline is not necessarily a healthy pipeline. Poor-quality opportunities can distort forecasts, waste salesperson and manager time, and create a false impression that there is enough business to achieve the sales target. By measuring pipeline quality consistently and improving deal qualification, sales teams can focus on viable opportunities and produce more reliable forecasts.
Key Insights
- Measure overall pipeline health: Use Pipeline by Close Date, Pipeline by Created Date, and Conversion/Win Rate reports to identify warning signs such as overdue close dates, ageing opportunities, or unusually high win rates.
- Identify poor-quality individual deals: Review the number of Close Date changes, Days Since Last Stage Change, and Opportunity Age. These metrics help managers quickly identify deals that may be stuck, repeatedly slipping, or unlikely to close.
- Manage by exception: Focus pipeline reviews on opportunities showing multiple quality warning signs, particularly deals forecast to close soon but with long sales cycles, stagnant stages, or repeated Close Date changes.
- Improve qualification in Salesforce: Capture qualification information directly on the Opportunity so salespeople and managers can clearly understand why a deal is worth pursuing and whether it has a realistic chance of being won.
- Use pipeline quality to improve forecasting: Removing or correcting weak opportunities gives managers a more realistic view of the funnel, improving forecast accuracy and confidence in pipeline coverage.
How To Apply This
- Assess overall pipeline health.
Start with Pipeline by Close Date, Pipeline by Created Date, and Conversion/Win Rate. Look for overdue opportunities, unusually old deals, and other signs that the funnel may be overstated or incomplete. - Review individual opportunities by exception.
Focus on deals with multiple Close Date changes, a long period since the last Stage change, or an unusually high Opportunity Age. Challenge whether these deals genuinely have a realistic chance of closing. - Strengthen opportunity qualification.
Add qualification fields to Salesforce that reflect your sales process. At a minimum, ensure salespeople can explain whether the business can win the deal, wants to win it, and considers it worth winning. - Use pipeline reviews to validate qualification.
Treat the information captured in Salesforce as the starting point for constructive discussions between salespeople and managers. Where the qualification rationale is weak, either improve the opportunity or qualify it out. - Repeat the process regularly.
Pipeline quality is not a one-off exercise. Make these checks part of regular pipeline and forecast reviews so that poor-quality opportunities do not accumulate and distort future reporting.
